Melanie Griffith has a long, storied history of drug and alcohol abuse dating back to her days as Mrs. Don Johnson. Lately, the wife of Antonio Banderas seems to have a new drug of choice – plastic surgery. But Star magazine says the actress has been using again, and her husband has made it clear: rehab or divorce.
Melanie Griffith has checked into a rehab facility, her rep confirms to Star.
“She is there to reinforce her commitment to stay healthy. This is part of a routine plan that was designed between her and her doctors years ago,” Melanie’s publicist, Robin Baum, tells Star of the actress’ stay at Cirque Lodge in Utah.
But an insider tells Star that this stint in rehab is a bid to save her marriage. “She’s working with the counselors on getting control of her demons.”
The 52-year-old movie star has battled addictions to drugs and booze since she was a teenager and she’s had several previous stints in rehab. But her latest fall off the wagon is the last straw for her husband of 13 years, Antonio Banderas.
“The reason Melanie checked in was her husband was demanding that she get clean and sober,” another source tells Star. “He told her that if she didn’t get the help she needed it would be the end of their marriage.”
According to a third source, “Melanie’s struggling right now, but Antonio has been checking in on her as much as he is allowed, making sure she gets back on her feet. Without Antonio in her life, I honestly believe Melanie would be dead.”
I guess this shows that addiction can be a lifelong struggle, no matter who you are. It’s sad, because Melanie’s addiction problems have ruined her last two marriages, and probably taken a toll on her career. It’s sad for their family, too – they have one daughter, Stella, and Melanie has two other children. Unfortunately, this is probably an all-too-familiar situation for them. It seems that Antonio is going the “tough love” route with his wife. Hopefully, that will be motivation enough for Melanie to start taking better care of herself.

Courageous woman = ) She has a neck injury and dealing with the resultant pain. Her doc suggested she taper off and she listened.
If Antonio leaves Melanie she probably would kill herself,she adores that man. She won’t want to live without him. I truly hope she sticks to rehab for the sake of her kids and marriage.
I feel sorry for her, I don’t think she ever had a chance with her upbring that is, too much freedom as a teenager, hanging out with much older people and drinking at such a young age and her mom being OK with, not surprise that she has an addiction problem.
I do hope that she gets help, but this has been her life for so many years.

there were some blind items about this a while earlier. she looks much older than 52, which is saying a lot for hollywood, considering they mostly look 10 years younger than their real ages. she isnt doing herself any favors.
I wish she’d stop messing with her face before it’s too late. She should give Demi Moore a call. Obviously she’s got a secret fountain of youth and she should share it (hey why not?).
It is a LIFE LONG problem. I’m not saying this was her agenda, but I’ve known addicts who elect surgery just so they can have access to the pain meds.
Do you think there will be a Micheal Jackson backlash where celebrities try to detox their systems from all the prescribed drugs they have been mixing? Just in the past couple of years I can think of several celebrities who have mixed meds in a lethal cocktail. Anna Nichole, Heath, Michael, etc. It happens a lot in the real world too. Once tolerance sets in it’s real easy to make the mistake and take one too many.
I hope she finds sobriety and serenity in her life. She is much loved.
For someone who is so obsessed with looking younger you’d think she would just do one of the easiest things to achieve that which is to stay away from drugs and alcohol. That ages you so quickly.
I am surprised that Antonio has stayed with her that long. She seems like she can only bring trouble and problems.

I’ve never, ever understood why Banderas was attracted to her. I’ve seen her in interviews, and honestly, she is about as stupid as it gets. I used to like Antonio, but after he hooked up with her, I lost all respect for him. She is just that stupid. And coupled with her lifelong addiction problems, I just have to wonder what he could possibly have been attracted to.
I have to give Antonio credit. She’s kinda gross, but he’s really stuck by her. After leaving his first wife for her, I wouldn’t have expected it. Kudos to him.
She’s a little old for all this shit. Come on. Grow up melanie! The problem with her is that she is so scared that Antonio will find a better looking woman – insecurity.
I am also amazed that he stuck with her this long. She is just a wild child that never grew up. Her 79 year-old mother looks better than Melanie. Too much hard living.
obviously melanie has had collagen lips, eye lift, etc, but does anyone else think her nose -strangely- has gotten bigger? i remember her as having a tiny little nose back in ” working girl” but maybe i’m hallucinating. wouldn’t be the first time 😉
Wow, that whole addiction and fighting thing must be sooooo tough for the young girls. I really hope they don’t really catch all of the nasty details. Think about your mom being an addict. That is the worst kinda thing… I hope she recovers soon and gets a grip back in life.

I think it says a lot for Antonio that he is still there. In Hollywood you leave as soon as you have one bad night. There must be some real love and deep commitment. I am glad for the girls sake because it means they do have one steady parent. I hope Melanie can succeed. I have never liked the personality she presents but this cannot be easy.
She ruined her face with bad surgery at least 20 years ago. Something happened to her smile.
I love Melanie, although not crazy about the babytalk voice she has. I still think she’s a decent actress and I want her to win her battles. I don’t recall her ever getting bad tabloid press except for her addictions.
But the worst things she’s done to her looks are from the cigarette smoking, the alcohol, the drugs, and the resulting lack of sleep and hydration to her skin. Smoking cigs alone all your life will wreck your skin.
Meh – she’s getting her name out there, probably wants to bring in some scripts-I mean when’s the last time you saw her in a movie? Not like there is a lot out there for her she’s talentless to begin with, now she looks like somebody’s alcholic gramma.

On another note, just about nobody white looks good with bright red lipstick, Melanie included. An olive skinned brunette MAYBE can pull it off, and even then. I wish women would quit wearing that creepy, lurid color – it’s always a bad idea.

Melanie Griffith is a low-life junkie with money! I only hope Banderas finally wakes up,leaves her and SAVES his only daughter Stella while there is still time! BOTH of Griffith’s other kids ended up in rehab before the ripe old age of 20! What does that tell you?

I think Antonio is trapped in this marriage…Melanie tends to grant interviews to magazines, stating that Antonio has saved her, and that she fears sliding back into addiction. These articles seem to coincide with reports of Antonio being seen with an attractive woman. Melanie is the supreme emotional blackmailer.
I imagine Antonio simply wanted to rescue her and he stays hoping to save her from herself.
Amazing he still has his looks. He should leave and let her fall. Stella should matter more than Melanie. I always believed that the minute the child enters the scene, the kid is the first priority.
